Dr. Thomas has been a board-certified rheumatologist with the practice since June 1998. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, where he teaches at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Dr. Thomas is the author of The Lupus Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Health Care Providers (2nd edition, Johns Hopkins University Press), widely regarded as the leading patient-education resource on lupus. He has held numerous national leadership roles, including Immediate Past Chair of the National Board of Directors of the Sjögren’s Foundation, Chair Emeritus of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of the Lupus Foundation (DC/MD/VA Chapter), and a current member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Rheumatology. He has also served as President of the Rheumatism Society of the District of Columbia.

He is also a nationally recognized speaker, consultant, and expert advisor on lupus and Sjögren’s disease for academic and industry organizations.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Thomas is among the inaugural group certified by the American College of Rheumatology in musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosing and treating rheumatic diseases (RhMSUS). In 2024, he was inducted into the Academy of Medicine of Washington, DC.

Dr. Thomas received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed his rheumatology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In addition to patient care and teaching, he is a nationally recognized speaker and consultant on lupus and Sjögren’s disease.

His honors include the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award (with Commendation), the Lupus Foundation of America Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s Lupus Hero Award, and repeated recognition as a Top Doctor by Washingtonian magazine and national physician rating organizations.
